The Sky’s the Limit: Size Limits of Breast Implants

Why Women might choose Breast Enlargement Surgery

There are many women who are pretty unsatisfied with the size of their breasts, although most of us ladies wish we could be bigger rather than smaller. Women often wish they could change the shape and positioning of their breasts as well as their size. Some women naturally have small breasts and simply wish to increase their size, whereas other women may have noticed changes with their breasts following weight loss, pregnancy or age. The operation to increase breast size and shape is called a breast augmentation, although it’s more often referred to as breast enlargement, breast implant surgery or a boob job.

Going Bigger, and going Bigger still

For women contemplating a boob job, the issues to consider are more than just a desire to have a larger cup size. Decisions relate to how many cup sizes to increase the breast size by, and the shape of the overall breasts following surgery. For some women, the changes they’d like to see are not so drastic; it might just be that they wish to regain a lost cup size from weight loss, increase the natural size just a little, alter the overall appearance of sagging breasts, or change the shape of the breasts. Sometimes symmetry is an issue as well, even though it’s common and normal to have one breast slightly larger than the other.

The goal for some women is to change their breasts enough to make them feel happier within themselves, but not to alter them so much that they seem unnatural. Surgeons really do share this viewpoint, and they specialise in making the new breast implants look and feel as natural as possible. This is helped along by some incredibly realistic looking and feeling silicone breast implants, which can help to achieve the perfect end result. On the other hand, there are an increasing number of women who really don’t want a subtle result! There is a growing trend for women to want a more drastic increase in size, and a specific shape to match. Some celebrities have helped this trend along (the most notable one is Jordan aka Katie Price), and it is hats off to celebrity girls who are happy to flaunt their new chest areas and liberate women to following their dreams.

How Big can a Breast Implant be?

It really doesn’t matter if you belong to the ‘subtle and natural’ breast implant camp, or the ‘big and bold’ breast implant camp. At the end of the day, breast implant surgery is about achieving the end result that a woman really wants, and to make that woman happier inside her own skin. There are no ‘right’ choices to make, but there are a few factors that must be taken into consideration when making a choice about breast size following implant surgery. One of the greatest dilemmas that are met by the breast augmentation surgeon is that of clients who want unrealistic outcomes. The job of the breast augmentation surgeon is to enhance and improve the appearance of breasts whilst maintaining the wishes of the client, but sometimes clients desire a change in breast size which simply isn’t practically achievable. The surgeon needs to carefully consider the existing breast size and tissues of a woman and will advise her about how large an implant her chest area can accommodate. This also includes a careful appraisal of body frame and height, and how well a woman will therefore accommodate the extra weight of the implants. There is no definitive answer to the question of the biggest size implants that a woman can have, but the wisest thing a woman can do is to listen carefully to her surgeons’ recommendations. If she is insisting on something that the surgeon is not so happy about, she should listen to why her surgeon feels that the increase in size is inappropriate. A good surgeon is one who will tell the client the truth and only perform a realistic surgery, but a bad surgeon is more likely to follow the clients’ wishes first and foremost. The outcome can be devastating, as the wrong breast implant size can lead to the need for further surgery to rectify the first mistakes.

The pocket that the implant is pushed into must be large enough for the implant. There will be a limit to the size of the pocket and to the amount of stretching that the skin on the breasts can take. If a woman wishes to have an extreme change in size, this may be achievable in stages rather than in one go, with maybe two or three breast augmentations which allow the breast tissues to recover and adapt to the new size each time.

Listen carefully to the advice given at the consultation and respect the surgeons’ knowledge, expertise and experience. Any recommendation over a size limit is made because the surgeon wishes to achieve the best, most successful outcome and make the clients wishes a reality.
